Why is having met on a dating app still a taboo?

So… How did you two meet?

There’s a very specific pause that happens before answering that question.

It usually starts with eye contact. Then a micro-glance between you and your partner. A silent negotiation. Are we telling the truth, or are we going with “through friends”?

Because somehow, in 2026, saying you met on a dating app can still feel like admitting you ordered your soulmate with next-day delivery.

In other words: it’s not that people don’t want love anymore.
They’re just tired of how dating has been designed.

But here’s the reality: most of us are busy.

We’re building careers, friendships, routines, lives that don’t always collide with new people organically. We’re not wandering through candlelit bookstores at 3pm on a Tuesday hoping destiny shows up in linen.

We’re commuting. We’re traveling. We’re answering emails at midnight.

Of course we meet online.

But then comes Sunday lunch, when your grandma asks how you met.

We met online.

Yes, grandma. The internet.

There’s still this idea that meeting digitally makes it less romantic.

Less spontaneous. Less real. But what’s actually happening is the opposite. You’re choosing to meet someone. Intentionally. You’re saying: I want to connect. I’m open.

That’s not desperate. It’s decisive.

The truth is, no one questions it once the relationship is solid. Once there are shared apartments, Sunday routines, holidays with both families. Suddenly the origin story becomes irrelevant.

Because it was never about the algorithm. It was about two people whose lives aligned.

And maybe that’s the real shift. Romance isn’t defined by where you met. It’s defined by what you build after.

So next time someone asks how you met, skip the awkward pause.

“We met online.”

And if grandma still looks confused, just tell her it was modern fate.

She’ll come around, especially when she sees how happy you are.
